“The history of the Buffalo Post Office is a small but important part of the history of the city itself. The growth of the post office mirrors the growth of the city in population and business. This book is a display of covers from our personal collections with a gathering of information from various sources related to those covers. There are a couple of covers not from our collections, and they are noted. We have tried to include as much information as possible relating to the covers pictured. Although we were asked to include prices, this was not practical due to the many variables involved with individual covers. Many aspects of a cover can affect its price, such as rarity, stamps, cancels, destinations, subject matter, and cachets.

There has been very little written about Western New York postal history since Pitt Petri published “The Postal History of Western New York – Its Post Offices and Postmasters” in 1960. There was a loose leaf book of the Nate Calkins collection done in 1993, “Early Buffalo Postal History – The Collection of Nate Calkins”, but nothing else. Petri’s book was a well-researched book of information, but no covers shown. On the other hand, the Calkins book focused on covers and cancels, but had little information. Our intention was to have a more complete book with both covers and information.”
