From our early beginnings in 1967, we slowly organized into a workable society. Meetings were held at approximate monthly intervals until the Bulletin began informing our members of current events so that our scattered membership need not meet so often.
In 1,969, we drew up and duly approved our Constitution and Bylaws which formally set forth our purpose "...to advance the knowledge of the postal history of the State of New York by means of education and historical research; to acquire and disseminate through publication, exhibition or otherwise information relative to the organization and development of post offices and postal systems in the State of New York".
In 1970, we published our first book "Federal Post Offices of New York State 1792-1969," a monumental work by the late Lee S. DeGraff, which led to similar works by other authors and publishers. Since then we have published seven more books or pamphlets in an on-going program which has more scheduled, all valuable handbooks in our chosen field.
Gradually we have established the present pattern of two general meetings annually, with regional gatherings at irregular intervals.
Our Bulletin containing membership meeting information, auction, and other items of general interest is issued quarterly. In addition, a non periodical journal of New York State postal history articles is published as an annual or semi-annual release.
The Bulletin offers free adlets for members to advertise their wants. The members' auction consists of about 100 lots of postal history.
A 100-lot auction in each issue of the Bulletin is one of the most popular services we provide. Items are geared to NYS postal history, but also has items from other collecting areas. Open to all members, both as consignors and buyers.. Usually mail sale but occasionally mail/floor bidding. No buyers' commission.
In addition to the Bulletin, the Society encourages submission of longer manuscripts for publication. We do not reimburse authors, but carry all costs and recoup our investment through sales of the work. Wouldn't you like to see your work in print and nationally distributed?
Twice each year in May and October at a central NYS location; as requested and organized by members, regional meetings are held in differing locations. Usually there is a dealers' bourse at both semi-annual. and regional meetings. A great opportunity to add to your collection.
The ESPHS has an excellent award program. Competitive exhibits open to the public are encouraged to make use of our awards. Silver trophies and certificates of merit are made available to exhibition committees on request. Our only restriction is that they be won by exhibits of NYS postal history.
Complete and forward the application form to the Secretary with appropriate dues. Applications are published in the next Bulletin after receipt, and membership is confirmed in the succeeding issue.
Dues are currently $ 10 per annum, payable in advance.
