Steuben (Herkimer County)

1795-1796

Steuben, NY March 3, 1796 M. Brown Jr. (PM)

The records surrounding Steuben PO are sketchy at best. Smith and Kay list it as being EST Sept. 13, 1795 and discontinued in 1796 (no other information). The letter is headed Fort Stanwix (now Rome). Matthew Brown PM. Examination of Rome post office records shows it was established April 1, 1796 Matthew Brown, Jr. PM. Fortunately Brown franked the Steuben cover Matthew Brown, Jr. Apparently Brown Neglected to use the Jr. when Steuben PO was established but did use it when the name was changed to Rome.

Thus this has to be NY State's earliest D.P.O. The post office existed only 5 1/2 months in 1795-96
